Permission message to artist

This is evidence of the message sent to the band (Frank and Derol) asking for permission to use their song 'Barely love you too' for our A2 coursework.

Editing Practise

To practise editing to the beat we were given a Final Cut document with the following things:
A selection of six different tracks.
Cut up sections from the video to DJ Formats - We Know Something You Don't Know. Original version is below.
The was to create a dynamic video using this footage and specifically editing to the beat. The advantage of using the raw footage from the DJ Format video is that the video has performers wearing animal costumes so there are no issues with lip-synching.

From the process we learned the following:

1) By arranging the video sequences on top of each other on the timeline you easily cut through the footage to cut between the various performances.

2) Clicking on the Show Audio Wave Forms to bring up an illustration of beats and structure of the track. This allowed us to edit accurately to the beat and change the pace of the editing to suit the tempo of the track.
3) To create an authentic and interesting edit, there has to be regular transitions between a variety of performance types.
Here is an example of our work:

How to lip-synch

Using the files of a past student video we were taught how to match up a filmed lip synched performance with the original track.
It is important to have the audio that was used in the performance audible in the playback so you have more to go on than just the mouth of the words to synch up the audio and visuals.
First we placed the audio track about 10 seconds in on the timeline and lock it so it can be altered or moved.
We then found the very start of the singing on footage in the browser window and placed a mark (m) and then did the same with the audio in the timeline.
The footage was then brought down to the timeline ensuring that both these marks were matched up. If there was a discrepancy then the footage could be moved left or right slightly using the < and > keys.
The rest of the footage was lip-synched in a the same way and place on higher video lines allowing us to cut between the footage creating a fast paced edit between already synched footage.

Song Choice for Music Video

The Song we have decided to use as a group is the song 'Barely Love You Too' by Frank and Derol.

Lyrics:

Say you will, say you won't
You can wear my sticker, can have my vote
I don't really care, even if you don't
'Cause you make me smile,
yeah you make me smile

Tell me this, tell me that
If I feel it too then I can say it back
'Cause every heart I've owned I've had to give it back
Don't you make me smile,
don't you make me smile

Stop these games, I'm not afraid to say I'm not ashamed
You know that I would do anything
Tell me what you wanna say, is it safe enough to say
I barely love you too [I barely love you]
I barely love you too, hey, hey hey
I barely love you too [I barely love you]
I barely love you too, hey, hey hey...

Take a chance, if you dare
Make it easier for to me to meet you there
And even if this road ends up at nowhere
Make it count for now, make it count for now

Stop these games, you got me feeling like I'm so insane
You know I'd tell you but I feel restrained
Is it safe enough to say? Remind me qu'est-ce say
I barely love you too [I barely love you]
I barely love you too, hey, hey hey
I barely love you too [I barely love you]
I barely love you too, hey, hey hey...

Don't wanna be the first to admit it
I wanna know that you're all in it
I feel like jumping off for the first time

barely love you too [I barely love you]
I barely love you too, hey, hey hey
I barely love you too [I barely love you]
I barely love you too, hey, hey hey...
barely love you too [I barely love you]
I barely love you too, hey, hey hey
I barely love you too [I barely love you]
I barely love you too, hey, hey hey...

By Looking at the lyrics we have co
me up with a lot of ideas for our music video in relation to the lyrics; possible locations, shots etc...

MUSIC VIDEO SNAPSHOTS

Media Work 6 Snapshots

In our first lesson we had to analyse the music videos we enjoyed watching in our spare time and briefly right notes on what we liked about the music videos. With the use of snapshots of different parts of the music video it allowed me to show what bits i found particularly interesting

Analysis of digipaks from the Indie Pop genre

I will be analysing the common features and conventions of digipaks from the indie pop genre. This will help us to see the features that are usually incorporated within the genre to either include them or go against them in our own digipak creation.

Technical Analysis - Destiny Child, Cater To You

Six Stills - Music Video Analysis

Kanye West – Mercy
Continuity editing is used throughout the video whilst the camera is panning from left to right, giving the illusion of a large, never ending room.
I like the concept of this and believe it is an interesting way to film. I also believe this technique will work well with both upbeat and slow tempo music. The artists are performing to the audience as in many generic music videos. However, with this special filming technique, the video is made to be interesting and enjoyable to watch.

Taylor Swift – We are never ever getting back together
A split screen is used in this video to portray a phone call. This is a quirky way to tell the story line in which the lyrics are telling us. Continuity editing is also used in this video. However, different rooms and scenarios are set out, keeping the video upbeat. This fits in perfectly with the genre of the song.
I like the idea of a split screen as it allows a different transaction from one scene to the next. I think we could use this idea in our own music video

Example – Watch the sun come up
Animation is used within this video however is not used continually throughout the entire video. Instead, sketches of the scene/artist are used as a transitional technique. I think this works really well and fits in well with the story. This is really interesting to watch as is transforms the video into a work of art rather than using ordinary scenery.
I think we could interpret this into our video to make it more artistic and unique whilst keeping the spot light on the artist and enhancing their performance.

Beyonc̩ РMe, Myself and I
The majority of this video is footage being played backwards. I think this works really well as it allows the story line to be unravelled and allows for enigmas to be answered by going to the beginning of the story at the end of the video. In certain moments, this technique looks amazing. For example, when she is having a cigar, the movement of the smoke is abnormal and looks as if she is breathing it in.
This technique is attainable and is an interesting way to tell a story in a short amount of time.

The Vaccines – Wetsuit
The majority of this video is photographs. This technique mimics looking through a photo album and gives us a chance to see the audience of the artist’s concert. This gives the video a happy, upbeat vibe. The pictures taken are also edited and all fit well together. At the risk of the photographs being boring to look at, there is also footage within the video. This then leads up to footage of the band itself playing the concert. This puts the focus back onto the product. I like this idea as it combines many different concepts together, creating an artistic video.

Gorillaz – Clint Eastwood
Animation is used for the entirety of this video. The Gorillaz use avatars in order to promote their band. This allows them great creativity whilst making their videos as they can make them as bazar and imaginative as they like. Their avatars also perform throughout the video, giving the generic element of a performance in a unique way.
Animations allow for far more creativity which may be interesting, challenging and fun to produce.
